I was recently introduced to the organization EQUAL when I received a cute beanie and bracelet from the organization. I talked briefly about it in an article where I asked for everyone to Prepare, Pamper, and Prioritize in 2017.
Speaking on prioritizing I think it is time that we started to open the conversation of equality back up and that is what EQUAL is doing!
When it comes to issues of equality it is a wide open gaping topic. From race relations to gender equality to gender, and those with disabilities. It is not just a black and white issue.
Most people will tell you they feel at some point in their lives they have been discriminated against, that includes men! The all-American white male has even faced discrimination or inequality in his lifetime. It is time for all of us to experience equality!
Granted, you can’t compare one’s experience with discrimination to another’s. That is like trying to compare one’s physical or emotional pain to that of another’s. We all have our own burdens and difficulties.
Perhaps that is why it is so difficult for us to be open-minded, and open-hearted. The scope is so large we can’t narrow the subject down enough to see things clearly. Seeing things from another’s perspective is hard. Most of us can’t see ourselves clearly, let alone another.
To some degree we are all judgmental, and discriminatory, we can’t deny that because it is part of our human nature. Yet, we know we are not born to judge or discriminate, we learn to.
In honor of Martin Luther King day, all I ask of myself, and each of you is to open your scope a little. To prioritize in 2017 to look at one segment of the human race in a new way. Make friends with a disabled person, donate to a cause, change the way you speak of a race different from your own, treat the opposite gender more respectfully, stop staring at the gay couple having dinner with their adopted child, don’t assume everyone on welfare is lazy, consider that co-worker with depression isn’t just using it as an excuse for another day off work.
EQUAL is in their start-up phases but is run by former executives of Amazon, Audible, Weightwatchers, seasoned entrepreneurs, and millennials that are ready to rally. They believe embedding a positive identity for equality will disrupt discrimination to change the world. Their goal is for equality to move away from forced accommodation and transition to being an admired value and I am excited to see what they will bring to the world.
We are all different. None of us are without our challenges in this life. No one is perfect. I personally face my own struggles each and every day. I bet you do too. Isn’t it time to stop judging each other?
In 2017 can’t we all just get along and love one another?
It is my belief that we can, and that we will.
Please share this article, and other’s promoting equality, change, and love in 2017. Spread more kindness, more awareness, less negativity. I am so tired of all the hate messages on social media, all of the depressing posts. We are what we eat, and that goes for what we feed our minds as much as our bodies.
