A good night’s sleep is so important for our well-being.
Our health is improved when we have restful sleep.
Mental functions are sharper and more reactive.
Our bodies heal and repair during sleep.
All which equate to a better mood and mental outlook during our waking hours.
Yet, so many of us struggle to get restful sleep.

Have A Routine For A Better Night’s Sleep
We all know that routine is essential in life.
From having a work schedule to scheduling activities.
We know where we need to be and when.
Even our children and grandchildren have schedules.
Yet sometimes we fail to have a healthy nighttime routine.
Having routine tells our minds and bodies when it is time to wind down.
Your routine may include doing a facial, showing or bathing, or reading.
Truly, whatever works best for you.
I try to do one more round of giving my pets attention.
Another thing I do is making sure the house is locked down tight.
Then I go do my self-care items such as makeup removal, skin care, and dental care.
The nighttime to-do list does not have to be long and should not be overly taxing.
It’s just a way to trigger the mind to recognize that bedtime is near.
Turn Off Electronics For A Better Night’s Sleep
Even with today’s current blue light filters on cell phones and smart tv’s we need to let our minds shut down.
Scrolling your Facebook feed, or searching the web is not the best thing to do right before bed.
The worst thing to do right before turning in is playing games on our phones.
Watching television is quite popular before bedtime.
Many people have televisions in their bedrooms.
It’s wonderful to enjoy lazing in bed watching a movie but it may not be the best thing to do before sleep.
Reserve bedtime television viewing for the weekends when you can sleep in a bit later.
Even with blue light filters, the mind cannot easily segway from full on to restful that quickly.
Plus, gaming, the Internet, and television can affect our dreams.
Give your mind a chance to unwind.
Turn the electronics off at least an hour before bedtime.
Take A Relaxing Bath For A Better Night’s Sleep
The mind-body connection is strong.
To relax the brain it is helpful to relax the body.
Taking a relaxing bath before bed sure can help.
Using essential oils in the bath is an extra bonus!
Granted bubbles are nice and I do use them but they lack the healing and sedative powers of Lavender essential oil.
Try adding some Lavender along with your bubbles.
Lavender is known for its calming powers and helps you get a peaceful sleep.
Warm water can release muscle tension and relax you.
Washing the stress of the day away is always a great transition into bedtime.
This is also a great time to let your mind wander instead of focusing on specific to-do things on your list.
Calming Music or Guided Meditations For A Better Night’s Sleep
I love guided meditations.
They really do work if you submit to them.
I also enjoy listening to a sleep track on Pandora.
I do this using SleepPhones which I have written about before.
Listening to soothing sounds keeps our minds off distractions.
For me, it keeps me from thinking about what I didn’t get done or what I need to do the next day.
It can also keep you from sounds outside, or within the home if others are still awake.
Other calming sounds could be nature sounds like water, crickets, crackling fire or wind.
Give it a try!
