Why We Should Be Preparing For A Blog Conference:

Going to a blog conference of any kind includes all sorts of fun events!

From the food, swag, and meeting fellow bloggers and influencers to walking the red carpet and learning from the amazing speakers.

I think of a blog conference as happy madness.

They are sometimes chaotic, leaving you breathless, you want to take everything in and so much happens at once.

You are meeting new friends, and connecting with bloggers you have interacted with for ages.

You’re looking at your schedule to be sure not to miss important speakers that will help you become a better blogger.

At BlogPaws we get to meet and snuggle so many pets!

Pets we have been fans of online, who have their own blogs and social media accounts.

Yes, we gush and get starstruck.

There is swag galore to collect and this year we have interactive areas to emerge ourselves in!

However, the main reason most of us go to a blog conference is the chance to meet brands and potential sponsors!

Sponsors are the lifeblood of any blog.

Especially when you run your blog as a business.

Without sponsors, we could not afford our operating costs, let alone make a living blogging.

Meeting the people behind the brands puts a face to a name.

It is important not only to connect with new brands but to meet and greet the people you have already worked with face to face.

This is a great way to be not only remembered but considered a key prospect for future collaborations.

Connecting with brands and forming solid relationships with potential future sponsorships is key.

So how do we do this?

How To Prepare For BlogPaws Step By Step:

The first important thing to do when preparing for the BlogPaws conference is to have your Elevator Pitch ready!

Preparing For The BlogPaws Conference Elevator Pitch Image man and woman talking on elevator

What is an Elevator Pitch?

In summary, it is a summary in and of itself.

You may only have a few moments to capture the attention of a brand.

Think of how long it takes to ride an elevator a few floors.

That is about how long you may have to get a brand to remember you.

Your Elevator Pitch has to be unique, pithy, and on target about yourself, your blog, and what you can offer the brand.

Consider what is unique about you, about your blog, what you offer that other bloggers may not.

Why should this brand consider you as a viable option in promoting their products or services?

Keep it around 30 seconds in length.

Yes, it’s not easy to do.

That is why you want to write it, then practice speaking it out loud before you attend a conference.

You want to sound natural and remember to take short pauses and breathe.

Another important item when preparing for the BlogPaws Conference is business cards.

I really want you all to have plenty of business cards.

Hand them out like candy at a parade!

Business cards can be generic or creative but to be without them would be horrible.

Don’t forget them at home!

This has unfortunately happened to bloggers in the past and was one of their biggest regrets.

I already have mine packed in my suitcase.

You not only will be handing them to brands.

Give them to media groups, speakers, fellow bloggers and influencers too.

The more people that have a reminder of you the better.

Often people will write notes on your business card.

Something that helps them remember your conversation or even a future contact date!

Be Sure That You Collect Business Cards Too!

Preparing For The BlogPaws Conference Woman Holding Business Card

While you are handing out cards don’t forget to collect them.

My plan is to walk around with a zip-up binder that has special pages to slide business cards into.

That is how important the business card game is at a blog conference.

Write your own notes on the cards you collect.

The person you meet may not be the end contact.

Be sure to write down what you talked about so when you reach out you can be personal and specific.

This is very important when it comes to brands you connect with that you want to reach out to after the conference.

Speaking of meeting potential sponsors when preparing for the BlogPaws Conference, know who you want to meet.

Preparing For The BlogPaws Conference Brands You May Meet

Have a list of the most important brands to you and your business.

Make a plan of action based on your schedule of events to visit the people representing these brands.

Figure out when and where they will be located at the conference.

Decide when the best time is to go meet with them.

If you need help just ask one of your conference Ambassadors for help.

Hey, that’s me and four other amazing ladies this year.

I linked to all of their pawsome blogs in this post.

Hand them your card right away as you greet them so they are holding it as they are speaking with you.

It’s a psychological thing but tactile engagement is important.

Plus they will have it ready to write notes about you on.

After visiting with them don’t forget to jot down important notes on their business card as well!

After meeting a brand you are excited about, send a special nod their way, by giving them a shout out on social media!

BlogPaws has some amazing sponsors this year.

While I want to meet them all, a few I already have scheduled to meet are:

Chewy, because I have worked with them forever.

They are one of the first brands that worked with me when I was just a wee little blog.

The faith they put into me early on means a lot to me.

Darwin’s Natural Raw Pet Food.

Another brand I have worked with a long time.

My pets love their food and they have a new media contact I want to meet.

Wahl Pet, because we have used Wahl products for years.

I had no idea until recently that they had a pet product line!

It’s quite an extensive line of products too!

PetMate is another brand I am excited to meet with.

They have everything and I need everything!

As a pet mama to two dogs, two cats, and fish, I am always on the lookout for safe toys that are USA made!

I hate leaving all the other brands out but honestly, there are so many and more are being added daily!

The final tip I have for you when preparing for the BlogPaws Conference is having a nice About page.

Preparing For The BlogPaws Conference Dog With Curlers In Hair Text Around Image Says: It's All About Your Babe But It's Not

For me, the about page is one of the hardest things to write.

I have done extensive research on what to include in the “about” page and have done so.

Granted there is still room for some perfecting, and that is where I am currently at with my preparing for the conference.

Your about page is one of the first places many brands go to, even before your media kit!

It is also visited by readers so it is important that your about page speaks to both audiences.

We want everyone to know WHY.

Why we blog, why we chose the topics we write about, and why they should be a regular reader of our blogs.

This is just as important for brands to know as readers.

Each of us as bloggers are unique and we all bring our own flavor to the table.

We want brands and our readers to know about us as human beings.

Having images of yourself on your about page is important, even if you are a shy blogger.

You may not love photos of yourself but being able to put a face to your blog means everything.

Otherwise, brands and your readers will feel a disconnect.

Talk about who your blog is for.

Who are you writing for and who do your topics speak to and why?

Pinpoint your audience right away.

This allows both readers and brands to know if they are in the right place.

My blog is aimed at the on-trend mid-life woman.

Granted many of my articles speak to women of all ages but my market is in the mid-life area.

This is right up at the top of my about page.

When a reader or a brand go to my about page they know right away if my overall content is right for them or their brand.

Going into each topic I write about and why I write about them gives deeper insight.

Brands may not know right up front that I write about topics other than fashion!

When I started my blog I named it Fashion Beyond Forty because that was intended to be my only focus.

Things change, I changed, thus my blog changed.

Since I do not intend to rebrand my blog I make sure that my topics are known not only within my menu content but explained well within my about page.

Highlight awards and accolades on your about page.

Preparing For The BlogPaws Conference Nose To Nose Awards Trophies

Don’t be shy!

Showcase things you are proud of.

You can also name brands you are ambassadors for here too.

This is something I recently added and am still working on.

Introduce Your Pets And Collaborators.

You can name drop on your about page too!

I boast each of my pet’s profiles on my about page as they are as much a part of my blog as I am.

If you frequently collaborate with fellow bloggers you can list them as well.

Just remember, your about page is about you and your blog first.

What you can bring to your readers and brand becomes an organic part of that.

Sum It Up.

Having a nice way to stitch it all together helps.

A quote, an Impressum, or mission statement is a great way to begin or end your about page.

On mine I have a favorite quote from Coco Channel.

She sums up the entire philosophy behind my blog and why fashion is not just about clothing.

Due to your Elevator Pitch only being a snippet of who you are and what your blog is about you can ask brands you meet to read your about page.

We know they will want to see your media kit, that is a given, but to really get to know you, your about page is where it’s at!

Sounds like fun. I hope you have a great time!

  2. April 3, 2018 / 6:49 pm

I love blog conferences! I love meeting people I have made friends with through the Internet! It’s so much fun! All of my best friends are actually bloggers I met on line! It’s funny because it was weird to say that way back when, but now… It’s totally normal!

    • April 4, 2018 / 7:20 pm

I love that it is normal now days! Maybe one day we will get to meet at one! 🙂

I have not ever heard of this conference, but it looks like it could be fun! I’ve been to a few blog conferences, and it is always fun to meet new people and see bloggers that I have read online. There is a lot of prep work that goes into getting ready, though!

    • April 4, 2018 / 7:21 pm

Melanie I would love if you came to this one! What’s better than a conference that welcomes pets! Even if you do not have one you would love the speakers and events – plus you can enjoy other people’s pets. I am not taking mine this year as I will be super busy.
      Hope to see you there!

  4. April 3, 2018 / 9:31 pm

Blog conferences are great for anyone with or without a blog. Not only can you meet bloggers who might share the same lifestyle as you but you are faced with tons of opportunities to network. Sponsors will help you get on your feet especially if you’re searching for a break and are new to blogging.

    • April 4, 2018 / 7:44 pm

Indeed Nadalie! We even have a newbie table for breakfast every morning and a lot of people to help someone new to the microinfluencer or blogging scene. We want new people there and are happy to do all we can to help out.

  5. April 3, 2018 / 10:01 pm

I especially love the tip about preparing an elevator pitch. Even outside of blogging events, I find myself doing this frequently. Someone finds out I’m a blogger and asks me what it’s all about. While I’m handing them a business card, I give them my quick one-two and hope they’ll become a reader. Surprisingly, it’s really hard to come up with one that’s pithy and on point, but once you do, it’s truly invaluable. x

    • April 4, 2018 / 7:45 pm

Oh yes!! So true and I felt the same way when my vet asked me!! So funny! I am hoping mine isn’t too pithy at this point. LOL I may have over edited!

  6. April 4, 2018 / 7:53 am

I have yet to go to a blogging conference although I have heard great things from those who have attended as well as those who asked me to attend. I just have not been able to get away due to health issues, they always seem to creep up during the busiest times but I hope to be done with them once and for all!

    • April 4, 2018 / 11:15 pm

I hope you are done with them too Melissa. I do totally get it though. I have a lot of issues myself and I have my fingers crossed I stay on a good streak long enough to enjoy the conference fully. Granted I deal with daily struggles no matter what but mostly they are things I am used to. I have felt a bit weak the past week, and had a bit of a bug for a few days so I am hoping that was it and now I am good to go lol.
I do hope you get to go to a conference sometime though! The best thing we all can wish for is great health! Sadly we are not all made to have that.

What a fantastic post! Unfortunately I’m not able to attend the conferences, but reading about the amazing opportunities to not only connect with brands, but to also meet fellow bloggers is making me feel a bit sad!! I’m sure it will be amazing and if something ever does change, I would definitely use this post to help me prepare.

    • April 5, 2018 / 12:55 am

I am so bummed you can’t be there too Hindy! I hope that you can go next year. Honestly if it were not so close to where I live I probably could not go this year myself!

  9. April 4, 2018 / 2:31 pm

Business cards… BUSINESS CARDS… The peep has GOT to get me some business cards.

Oh, I do have some. But they have Nissy’s picture on ’em. Peep didn’t have the heart to switch Nissy’s picture out for mine, but…

But I think the time has come. Yup, time for THIS HANDSOME MARMALADE FACE OF MINE to be on MY business cards, for sure. purrs

    • April 4, 2018 / 11:20 pm

Oh no you need your OWN cards for purr! I mean for sure. Either way they are something you deserve to have obviously I mean you are famous and all. Maybe I can nudge your peep to get you some Seville.
I understand not wanting to swap out Nissy’s picture though.
I think there is a place for both kinds of cards – do you agree?
      (((Fur strokes)))

  10. April 4, 2018 / 2:58 pm

I can’t wait to get to Kansas City and meet up with our pawtastic Ambassador team! I have a lot of planning to do beforehand and I better get a jump on it.

    • April 5, 2018 / 12:57 am

Right?! I hope we don’t forget anything important. Even aside from packing there is a lot of prep work if we want to get the most out of it! I still have to work on my plans to meet the brands! I know a few I want to visit but there are SOOOO many lol how can we do it all? I think we just have to do our best and make the most of what we do fit in. As Ambassadors I know they want us to get good time to ourselves but I tend to get tunnel vision on helping others. So excited to meet you there!

  11. April 4, 2018 / 3:08 pm

Last year was my first time attending BlogPaws. It was really great to finally meet some of my favorite bloggers (people and pets!) You’ve offered a lot of great advice on being prepared for the conference. Sadly, I don’t think I’m going to be able to make it this year.

    • April 4, 2018 / 11:06 pm

Thank you Beth and I am really sorry you don’t think you can make it this year. I wish that you could but who knows, maybe you will be able to after all. I sure would love to meet you there!

  12. April 4, 2018 / 6:25 pm

There is so much awesome info in this post I don’t know where to begin. I didn’t realize so much would go into getting ready for the conference, but I can see now why preparation is so important. Sadly I’m not attending the conference this year, but I will bookmark this page for when I come next time.

    • April 4, 2018 / 11:09 pm

Really bummed you can’t attend this year Christine but I hope to meet you at next years conference!
      I absolutely love your blog!
Thanks for appreciating my post too 🙂

  13. April 4, 2018 / 6:48 pm

Great advice! My about page is in pretty good shape – though I just realized that my awards are all on my partnership page. I guess I should list them in both places.

I definitely have a couple of brands I’m most excited to meet.

    • April 5, 2018 / 12:58 am

Yes I do not have many awards or accolades to put on mine but I am proud to show off the ones I have. I ended up putting mine on both pages too.
I am forever tweaking my pages lol
Can’t wait to see you there!

  14. April 4, 2018 / 7:21 pm

Joely, I’m so excited to meet you this year. Please tell me this will happen! You’ve provided an amazing amount of information here that all newbies will benefit from. I received so many business cards last year and handed those out everywhere. I actually didn’t even use my media kits at all. If I have one piece of advice it is this: all bloggers tend to be a bit introverted. Make an effort no matter how nervous you are and use the pets as an ice breaker!

    • April 4, 2018 / 11:22 pm

Heather we MUST locate each other while there!
You know I didn’t even print out any media kits.
      Save paper, save money lol.
Really I can’t imagine carrying around anything else at this point. I am terribly clumsy as it is.
Good to hear you didn’t even need yours!
That is excellent advice too Heather. I mean we are pet people, we don’t bite!
      Nor do our pets 🙂
Still wishing we could get a mini horse there ya know.

  15. April 4, 2018 / 7:37 pm

good advice! i like the way you made this post easy to read w/ the colorful headers for the different sections

    • April 5, 2018 / 12:59 am

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the feedback! I always wonder what readers like. And we know you give the best advice Mishu!

  16. April 4, 2018 / 9:44 pm

Great advice. I always feel like I should have done more to prepare for the conference, and now I know what to do! I like the elevator pitch – which I really need to perfect. Thank you.

    • April 5, 2018 / 1:00 am

So happy to help Sandy. Trust me I am forever tweaking my pitch, pages, etc and so on lol.
Can’t wait to meet you at the conference!

  17. April 5, 2018 / 8:38 am

I love how you emphasized these points! I totally agree that blog conferences can help a lot as it helps you network and connect with a lot of fellow bloggers as well as brands. It’s the first time I’ve heard of this particular conference but it sounds so amazing! Thanks for sharing 😀

    • April 5, 2018 / 10:29 pm

Thank you so much Aileen! I would love to meet ya there!
It is going to be their best ever since it is their 10th Anniversary Conference.
Every day I get more information on things that will be going on and I am like OMG how can I possibly do it all?
      It’s going to be amazing!

  18. April 5, 2018 / 10:19 am

My huskies and I will be there! We are so excited to meet everyone and connect with all the brands. Your post was very helpful on remembering everything I need to prepare for before the conference. Echo, Yoshi, and I look forward to seeing you at BlogPaws!

    • April 5, 2018 / 10:28 pm

Yay! I hope we get to meet! I know it’s going to be go go go the entire time and so many awesome people and pets!
I am so glad the post helped.
      I love your furbabies names!

  19. April 5, 2018 / 2:30 pm

How fun! I would love to attend this conference too! I’m pretty disappointed I missed it when it was in Phoenix near me not long ago. Have a blast!

    • April 5, 2018 / 10:34 pm

Awee I am sorry you missed one close to you too Heather!
I am lucky that it is close to me this year.
I hope to see you in the future at a conference.

  20. Laura
    April 5, 2018 / 5:08 pm

How do you find out information about blog conferences? I’m fairly new to blogging and would love to attend one in the future. I’m sure there is a blog out there for that haha. Workshops and conferences are amazing.

    • April 5, 2018 / 10:36 pm

      Hi Laura!
A lot of the conferences I hear about are through Facebook groups, googling it, or media groups. Many media groups have their own conferences.
If you want to email me from my contact page I am happy to share the conferences I know of or any other blogging info you want to ask about.
If I have answers for you I am happy to help!

  21. April 6, 2018 / 3:19 pm

Aww, I would love to go, if I’m not so far away. We have adopted cats, and having them is one of the happiest decision for us. 🙂

    • April 9, 2018 / 10:25 am

Marie I am so sorry you won’t be able to attend this year. I wish it were not so far away too. People who adopt pets are the best people in my book!

  22. April 7, 2018 / 3:14 pm

I can’t wait to meet you, Icy and Phoebe!! See you there Cathy and thank you for the compliment on the article!

  23. April 8, 2018 / 12:26 pm

Such great tips here. I’ve started counting down the days! I definitely need to work on my elevator pitch and my media kit. I’ve got my business cards ready to go and I’m trying to figure out which picture of the pups together I should use for my flat pet. I know the fact pet isn’t mandatory, but I think it’s such a cute idea! Looking forward to meeting you!

    • April 9, 2018 / 10:43 am

I think the flat pet idea is cute too. I am not bringing one although I would love to. Just did not have time to get one done and money going to other expenses right now.
However I am glad you are doing it! It is part of the fun of the conference for sure!
I am still practicing my elevator pitch – have recorded it a few times just to hear what I sound like lol.
Every time I say it slightly different but I guess that makes it more natural, maybe lol.
      See you there Irene!

  24. April 9, 2018 / 11:33 am

I am going, I can’t wait till it gets here. so many things to think about

    • April 9, 2018 / 9:45 pm

Right?! I am so excited and hope I remember everything I need lol. I am not a great packer since I do not travel a lot. I am probably brining WAY too much but at the same time not enough haha. See ya there!

  25. April 10, 2018 / 1:59 pm

This is so informative! This is going to be my first BlogPaws conference so I’m trying to learn everything I need to know about it in advance. Thank you!!

    • April 10, 2018 / 9:02 pm

Heather I can’t wait to see you!!! It’s my first BlogPaws as well and I am just over the moon! So ready to BE THERE!
