Wow, it’s one more year before the end of my forties! It’s truly hard to believe that I am forty-nine years old! I do not mind being almost fifty, age is just a number. Yet, with age comes some level of wisdom so I thought I would share some things with you. Just forty-nine things I have learned in my forty-nine years, this should be easy right? Not a difficult task at all considered I did one last year! Sarcasm aside, I may do one more, for when I hit fifty, but I think I will stop after that.
So please enjoy this article, in celebration of my birthday and last year in my forties…
What I Have Learned So Far 49 Things In 49 Years
I have learned is that it is absolutely okay to take it easy. There is a difference between self-care and laziness. Now and then we need to recharge our bodies and our minds. Even more so, we need to do this without guilt!
Oral health care is so important. It’s something we all know, but flossing, brushing properly and taking care of our tongue is key to overall oral health. We only get one set of teeth, unless you can afford some amazing cosmetic dentistry.
I have learned not to put off checking out my options when it comes to my health. Admitting that I have been guilty of canceling doctor appointments in my life I have worked on this. I do not like going to the doctor, and I am impatient in waiting rooms. Maybe that is because due to my lifelong health issues I have had to go so often. Either way ladies, we need to be sure we are our own advocates when it comes to our health care.
Another valuable thing I have learned is not to be shy when it comes to opening up about menopause! There is nothing to be ashamed of and it’s a natural part of our lives. From great supplements to help us through the changes to changes in our bodies and changes in our hair. Menopause is a challenging time in our midlives yet it’s not all bad! As women, we need to advocate for each other and feel okay about discussing things like this with each other openly.
Something I recently learned is that Tinder may not be for me. I do not believe we are ever too old to try something new and I will go into my 50’s like a wrecking ball, thank you, Miley, but I have some years of practice on you. I personally did not enjoy it but it was fun to give it a go. If you are single I say go for it! A lot of couples met on there and are quite happy.
I Have Learned A Lot About How To Be The Best Me.
Learning how to deal with people comes with experience for many of us. Friends come in all types, some easier to deal with than others. Yet everyone brings something valuable to our lives or we would not have them in it, right? I have learned over my 49 years how to deal with different personality types. Even “That One Friend”.
I have learned that fashion is not so difficult. I have also learned how to stretch my fashion dollar. Making casual clothing stylish can open you up to an entirely new wardrobe you didn’t realize you already have. Plus, it’s a lot of fun to challenge yourself to see how many looks you can create with what’s already lurking in your closet.
I guess it happens to all of us, nostalgia. Whether it’s our favorite oldies when it comes to music, or remembering old friends. We all become nostalgic at some point. I have a lot of nostalgia for old-fashioned candy. I tell more about this and visiting our neighborhood candy store in this article.
Defining yourself becomes more important as you get older. I do wish I had started when I was younger though. The story of you is the most important story you will ever read or write. Self-evaluation is key to being the person we want to be. This is something I have learned in my 49 years.
Speaking of defining oneself, it is also okay to re-define anytime. A new mission sometimes brings about taking stock of what matters and starting a new chapter, or a new book entirely. Never be fearful of showing you are fierce!
I Have Learned My Path Is Not Set In Stone.
We all need our own sacred space in our lives. A place we can retreat and relax. I learned this in my twenties and have always tried my best to find some area of my home that is all mine. Sometimes it was nothing more than a nook but it was wonderful. Now I have a lot of space to myself and I love it.
There were many times in my life that all I wanted to do was get out of Kansas. I learned, however, there truly is no place like home. I haven’t traveled extensively but I have traveled enough to know that Kansas is my forever home and I love it here.
A wonderful discovery in my lifetime thus far is that I love DIY projects. I am so happy that I am halfway decent at them. Now, I want to expand my knowledge and skills and do a ton more projects! It has become one of my favorite hobbies.
If I have learned anything in my life it is to always be prepared! Living in Kansas also means I live in tornado alley and I am always telling family and friends to be ready for a bad storm. Here you can find out what’s in my storm emergency kit.
This past year sure has taught me how to focus on my own needs as a woman and a human being. Getting myself back after the split with my husband was a hard road. Sometimes we need a wakeup call to remind us of our own empowerment.
I Have Learned To Embrace Every Part Of Who I Am.
Another thing I learned was how important healing is. Finding acceptance is how to do it. It’s easy to help others through their healing but facing your own is a whole different ballgame. The sooner one begins to accept their life as it is in the now the better.
I have totally learned to be on top of cleaning. Clutter is so distracting. By keeping on top of things before the mess gets out of control the easier life is. Our mental clarity depends on it. It’s healthier too in many ways, including helping those with allergies.
Happiness is so vital in our lives and can be found in the smallest of things. That is one reason I have the Happiness Is series on my blog. To inspire everyone to find their daily happiness. While I only write one article in the series per month, I do my best to find happiness every day.
With age comes confidence and the ability to stand up for ourselves, or those we love. Taking no for an answer isn’t an option when there is a way around things. You may find this interaction at our local Sephora interesting especially if you ever had an issue getting your free birthday gift.
I have learned not to succumb to pressure. Being confident in myself regardless of if I look perfect or not. I know I am the only judge of me that matters. When we are younger we more easily cave to the pressure of others. I am glad to be passed that stage of my life.
I Have Learned To Be Confident And Fierce.
Safety is so important to me when it comes to my family and myself. Just like above where I mention the storm emergency kit it is good to have a winter safe driving kit too. When I was younger I never thought about things like this. Now I prepare them for my young adult kids.
Shopping can cause insanity. Okay maybe that’s an overstatement but shopping can be quite the stressful chore at times. I have learned how to make shopping much easier and there are some excellent tips for you to read here.
Gifting a pet for the holidays is a bad idea. I learned this when I was quite young but I see that it happens quite often in our world. I try to help spread awareness about why this is a sweet gesture but more often than not goes wrong.
A more recent thing I have learned, in the past decade is what it is like being a midlife woman. Learning where I fit in was a major focus of my forties. Once I began talking to other women of midlife I learned I was definitely not alone.
Eating good food is so fun and important in my life. I also love my share of junk food but a change in how I look at food helped me drop a lot of weight! Fast food is important for my lifestyle too. You may be confused though because what fast food means to me may be different from what it means to you.
I Have Learned To Put Me First.
I have learned to embrace the days where less is more. Embracing the days I can unwind, relax, and slow down. Being an A-Type personality it can be a challenge for me to just chill. Learning how to accept that I should not always be on the go was a healthy thing for me.
Living through intention is key to a life well lived. What we set out through intention can change the way our lives play out. This is especially true when we follow through with action! As a life coach, this is a topic I talk with clients about often.
I think for most of my life I was using way too much skincare product. I finally learned that I need only use a small amount. This has saved me tons of money in the long run! Do you want to learn how much you should really be using? Check it out!
Over time I have discovered those “must-have” items we all need when it comes to beauty products. While some things have changed over the years I swear by these ten items even if you are not into beauty products.
Another really cool thing I have learned is nail polish hacks! Over my years I have discovered so many ways in which nail polish comes in handy and I am not talking about painting nails here. Even the guys will love this article!
I Have Learned To Accept Myself.
Until last year I had no idea there was a National Lazy Day but I tell you what, I love that there is! I also took advantage of this fact by listing the top 20 things not to do on this day. I promise you will enjoy doing nothing!
While I am totally into thrifty shopping I have learned that now and then I need to treat myself. My Pasha Jewelry Sandals are just that, a true treat. It’s so important to do nice things for ourselves sometimes. I plan to get another pair this summer!
Self-acceptance is crucial for us to be able to find happiness in life. Hey, It’s Okay is an idea that originated in Glamour Magazine. I found another blogger who wrote a post on it so I decided to follow suit. Hey It’s Okay is a way for everyone to list out acceptance of self.
Sometimes life takes courage. That is why I adopted the word Courage as my word of the year for 2018. I had no idea at the time just how much this would become a word of foreshadowing. Courage has been pushing me through 2018 and I have reflected on this word often.
This year was the first year I also adopted a quote of the year. It’s also been something I have reflected on often for strength and a reminder to be still at times. I think having both a word of the year and quote come in handy more than I ever imagined. This is another thing I have learned.
I Have Learned To Laugh And Enjoy Life.
As a pet person and someone who views her pets as far more than just a pet, but family, I have learned a lot. One of those things is that we can soothe our pets when they are suffering. While I have written tons on this topic one thing that comes up often is Cat Respiratory Infection. I am so happy to be able to take care of this for my pets.
Another topic that comes up frequently in my life coaching practice is the Law of Attraction. It’s a practice and study that truly works when done properly. The difference is in the way you think and to put things in the proper perspective. I am grateful that I learned this at a very early age.
This is a fun post about something I learned when I worked at a pool store in my twenties. Unless you swim frequently or own a pool you may not care but I find it interesting and kind of funny. Check it out if you want to know what happens when you pee in a pool. Not all lessons need be serious ones.
When I was younger I was all about vintage stores and antique shops. Since then I have become quite into flea markets. I have such fun at them and always find unique items to incorporate into my DIY projects. Writing this reminds me that I need to find out if any are happening now!
I have always had issues falling and staying asleep. For as long as I can recall this has been true. Plus, I am a night owl on top of it all. I learned that Sleepphones do the trick for me and I absolutely love them! Anyone who has problems falling or staying asleep should try them.
I Have Learned To Relax And Have Fun.
A hard lesson for all of us, if we are lucky enough to learn it, is when it is best to just quit. I know we are taught and told to never give up but sometimes that is exactly what we should do. There is, however, as with most things, a proper way to do it and mostly, knowing when to do it.
I had such fun with this article and while writing it learned a few things about myself. Sure it’s not that valuable to my life, or yours, but I bet you would love to come up with your own rider too. Why not? It’s fun to dream of being famous.
As a Gemini, I have always had more than one side to my personality. I have never been able to commit to one style. What fun would that be? 7 Charming Sisters caters to every woman we want to be with their gorgeous jewelry. I learned I can be whoever I want whenever I want.
Having been self-employed for over two decades I had a lot to learn. I have indeed learned a ton. There are a lot of things I could share with you but let me start with the top 5. Every woman who works from home should read this.
In my almost five decades I have discovered that there are a lot of great brands out there that do not get as much notice as they should. One of them is Seaside Medical. I can’t believe more people do not know about their post-traumatic response gel. I swear by it!
I Have Learned To Accept Change.
Pets are more than just pets. Pets are family. They are healing, loving, and loyal. Our pets deserve the best we can give them. I could never imagine life without pets. While I miss those who have passed I give those in my life all that I can. I hope that you also have a friend as true as a fur-friend in your life.
Being true to myself at all times is something I have learned. When you put so much personal information out on a blog it can be intimidating. This is true no matter how fierce one is. Being honest with my readers means I can be honest with myself. Get to know more about me.
Never be afraid to promote yourself! I have learned that life is all about promoting something. Be that yourself in a job interview, making sure your children get the education they deserve or a belief you feel strongly about. Never hold back and let the world know what you stand for and what you have to offer.
The most valuable thing I have learned in my 49 years is to help others. I have been working as a life coach and spiritual guide for decades. I sometimes forgot how much a part of it was me, and not just a job. We are forever growing and I am so glad that I realized I can combine all of the parts that make me, me, into one fantastic thing right here on this blog.
So there you have it. What I Have Learned So Far 49 Things In 49 Years. We all know I have learned a lot more than this and I know you have as well. Some things far more important and others not so much.
